MacDowall is an organized hamlet in the Rural Municipality of Duck Lake No. 463, about 30 kilometres southwest of Prince Albert. It sits beside Highway 11, the Louis Riel Trail, on the northern edge of the Nisbet Provincial Forest, a short distance northwest of St. Louis and just west of Red Deer Hill.
The hamlet takes its name from Day Hort MacDowall, an early territorial politician in the district during the 19th century. The region was originally heavily forested, and settlement came slowly in the early twentieth century, largely by settlers from Eastern Europe and Britain.
Today MacDowall has a Lions Club, started in the 1970s, which takes on projects in the community and hosts an annual supper and dance called the Harvest Ball near the end of harvest season, usually in late October or early November. A Lioness Club works alongside it. The hamlet's one church is the Anglican St. Stephen's, whose outside was remodelled in 2003 to make it wheelchair accessible.
